About IPL (INTENSE PULSED LIGHT):
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses pulses of broadband light to target and treat various skin conditions including sun damage, age spots, rosacea, spider veins, and uneven skin tone. Unlike lasers that use a single wavelength, IPL emits multiple wavelengths of light to address diverse skin concerns simultaneously for comprehensive rejuvenation.
How it works:
IPL emits pulses of light that penetrate the skin, targeting specific structures such as melanin in pigmented lesions, hemoglobin in blood vessels, collagen for skin tightening, and hair follicles for removal. The light energy is absorbed by these target structures, breaking down pigmentation, coagulating unwanted blood vessels, and stimulating collagen production for improved skin texture and tone. Over the following weeks, your body naturally eliminates the treated pigment and vessels, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin.

What to Expect From Your IPL Consultation?
Your IPL consultation at Allenby Cosmetic and BodySquad includes assessment of your skin concerns, tone, and type. We’ll review your medical history, discuss realistic expectations, and create a customized treatment plan. It’s important to disclose recent sun exposure, tanning, certain medications (photosensitizers), pregnancy, active skin infections, or history of keloids. Our approach is educational and pressur
The treatment area is cleansed, and a cool gel is applied to your skin. You’ll wear protective eyewear, and the IPL device will be used to emit pulses of light across the treatment area. You may feel a mild tingling or snapping sensation as the light pulses are delivered. The treatment usually takes 15-30 minutes depending on the area being treated.
Treatment Timeline:
- Treatment Duration: 15-30 minutes
- Results Visible: Pigmentation darkens initially, then flakes off within 7-14 days; redness improves gradually
- Optimal Results: Progressive improvement over 2-4 weeks; full benefits visible after treatment series
- Number of Sessions: Typically 3-5 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart*
- Maintenance: Annual or bi-annual treatments maintain clear, even-toned skin
*Individual results may vary.
Pigmented lesions may initially darken before flaking off naturally. Redness and vascular concerns improve gradually as treated vessels are absorbed by the body.
After IPL treatment, some redness and swelling may occur but typically subsides within a few hours. Treated pigmentation may darken temporarily before flaking off over 7-14 days. Avoid sun exposure, wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, and apply moisturizer as directed. Avoid harsh skincare products, exfoliants, and heat (saunas, hot tubs) for several days after treatment.
IPL is generally safe when administered by qualified professionals. Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, mild bruising, temporary darkening of hyperpigmented areas, and increased sun sensitivity. Rare complications may include blistering, scarring, or pigmentation changes, which are minimized through proper settings and aftercare.
Note: IPL is not suitable for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types V-VI), pregnant women, those with active skin infections, recent sun exposure or tanning, or individuals taking photosensitizing medications. We review your complete medical history during consultation to ensure safe treatment.
